SymbologyI believe that our culture is founded on, and formed by symbols that enable us to connect what we can see with those things that can only be understood by our souls. The symbols we use to express our patriotism, faith, love, and even socioeconomic status, are simply an outward expression of the desire we all share as human beings to belong to something larger than ourselves. The representation of these symbols in the images I have created reflects the way I see what my subjects present, as a means of communicating their belonging to the world around them.

About
My name is Brett Flashnick, and I have been a freelance photojournalist for the past decade. I love life, people, adventures, and all things visual. I feel that photography is so much more encompassing than what most people think it to be; just a snap shot of a moment in time, or a pretty place. To me being a photographer, and ultimately a visual story teller, is a constant evolution in the way that I see the world around me, influenced by life lessons, and my personal growth, combined with a fascination for the changing and emerging technologies that allow me to capture the world I see in both still and moving images. I have received many national and regional awards for my photography which include first place recognition from Columbia University, the Kentucky Press Association, Kentucky News Photographer’s Association, and the South Carolina News Photographer’s association, in addition to receiving the 2002 College Photographer of the Year award for sports photography, and the 2003 William Randolph Hearst Award in the News and Sports category. Some of my clients include The State Media Company, Associated Press, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Sports Illustrated, and Golf Digest. My work has also appeared in Time, Newsweek, Der Spiegel, National Geographic, People, The Situation Room, Anderson Cooper 360, ESPN.com, MSNBC.com, and the traveling exhibit The American President, presented by the Associated Press. I am currently represented by World Picture Network, and can be booked for assignment work globally by contacting me directly or through WpN.
