ULISES CASTELLANOS (Mexico city, 1968) studied communications in the UNAM.
He studied photography in Casa de las Imagenes and in Escuela Activa de Fotografia in Mexico and in the CFPJ (Centre de Formation et de Perfectionnement des Jounalistes) in Paris, France.
He was the coordinator and editor of photography in the Proceso magazine, for which he worked for over 12 years and where he founded the procesofoto.com agency.
Currently he is the photo editor in the newspaper El Centro, where he also publishes a weekly column called â€œEN LA MIRAâ€.
Castellanos has collaborated with the French magazine Paris Match as well as with El PaÃs Semanal, a weekly edition published by the Spanish newspaper El PaÃs.
His photographs have been published in various national and international newspapers and magazines. He has had 25 individual exhibitions and has taken part in 60 collective ones both in Mexico and abroad.
During the past years he has covered many national and international events. Among them stand out the Zapatist (EZLN) uprising in Chiapas (1994); the rafter crisis in the military base of Guantanamo, Cuba (1995); the counterinsurgency operatives in Colombia (1996); the visit of the Pope John Paul ll to Cuba (1998) and the Football world Cup in France (1998).
He has also carried out documentary reportages in Morocco and Sarajevo in 1998; on the mentally ill people in Mexico in 2000; on the aftermath of the September 11th attacks in New York and on the Afghanistan conflict in October 2001.
During the Iraq war, in 2003, he worked as a special correspondent in the Middle East.
Castellanos has given courses on photojournalism in the Universidad Iberoamericana and in the Tecnologico de Monterrey and workshops in Centro de la Imagen. He has also been the guest professor in Maison du Mexique of the CitÃ© Internationale Universitaire of Paris where he has given courses on photojournalism since 2006.
In 2003 he published a book called â€œManual de fotoperiodismo â€“ retos y solucionesâ€; the same year in which he took part in the jury of the Premio Nacional de Periodismo (the National Journalism prize). In 2004 he was a member of jury in the first international photography contest of National Geographic â€œLuces de Americaâ€.
Some of his most important exhibitions include: â€œCiudad de Mexico, Espacio en ConstrucciÃ³nâ€ which was held in Beijing, China in the Photo 798 gallery in 2004; â€œCicatricesâ€, which took place in Paris, in the Gallery of Renoir de le Latine in October 2005; â€œEl Tibetâ€ in February 2006 in the Alianza Francesa in MÃ©xico and â€œPeking, Ciudad Prohibidaâ€, held in the Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico, also in February 2006.
In April 2006 he participated in a seminar given by the VII Photo Agency in Pasadena, California.
A month later, in May 2006, he initiated his column â€œEN LA MIRAâ€,
In 2006 he published a photographic reportage in Paris March on the Miracle Child of the Pope John Paul II.
Later in 2006 he edited a special issue dedicated to Mexico for the Hachette Philipacci Group, which was published in Match du Monde in the issue of August-September 2006.
The same year he also did a special coverage for El PaÃs on the presidential elections in Mexico.
Ulises Castellanos is one of the founders of the newspaper El Centro, which came out recently in the beginning of 2007.
In May Castellanos was invited to PhotoespaÃ±a 2007 to participate in a discussion forum with other photographers, organized by Christian Caujolle in the Centre of Contemporary Art Reina SofÃa.Ulises Castellanos 's current location:
