Paete Rite of the DeadThe Paete's Santo Sepulcro, an image of the dead Christ in state and believed to have come from Mexico and scuplted in 1516, undergoes a rite of the dead ritual similar to the mummification process observed in the Cordilleras and is done during Holy Wednesday of Holy Week. The rite supports the theory that in pre-Hispanic Philippines, this ritual was widespread. The reason for this to be practiced might be that for the friars to effectively Christianize the natives, this custom of mummifying a tribal chief was incorporated to the solemn celebration of Holy Week.
