Inside Honduras: photographs by Pablo DelanoThese photographs are drawn from a book project undertaken in collaboration with the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History; specifically with the Institute’s director, historian Dr. Darío A. Euraque. The project aims to investigate the nature of the people of Honduras with an emphasis on the contributions of ethnic minorities such as the Garifuna (afro-descendent) and indigenous groups such as the Miskito, Tawahka, Pech and Maya Chortí. At the heart of our collaboration lies a shared belief that historical and contemporary Honduran reality lies at the intersection of all its component ethnicities. We reject the notion that ethnicity can or should be conveniently categorized, catalogued or prioritized as a commodity in order to fuel tourism. To the contrary, we believe that the essence of this complex society lies in its contested spaces; those places where conflict, negotiation and influence overlap and generate ethnic flux. Darío Euraque and I traveled extensively in Honduras during the past year and a half. However, the coup d’etat of June 28 put a stop – for now – to our work in the field. Nevertheless, we remain committed to continuing the project and seeing it through to publication. Darío Euraque returns to his post as a professor of history at Trinity College in January, 2010.
