Award winning photographer Kemal Jufri started his career in Photojournalism & Documentary Photography more than a decade ago as contract photographer for Agence France Presse (AFP) Jakarta bureau in 1996. At the end of 1998 he left AFP to work as a contributing photographer for Asiaweek magazine until the magazine’s closure in 2001.

Since then, as a freelance photographer, he regularly works on assignment covering stories across South-East Asia with a focus on Indonesia for major publications around the world including TIME Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, STERN, Der Spiegel, Business Week International and many more.

With a career as a professional photojournalist spanning over 15 years, his experiences included covering the 1997 Asian financial crisis to the political turmoil leading to the bloody rioting in 1998 that ousted former dictator Suharto from his 32-year rule, the 1999 post UN-sponsored referendum violence in East Timor that killed more than a thousand people and forcibly pushed 300,000 more into West Timor as refugees but opened the way for the territory to gain independence from Indonesia and recognized internationally as an nation on 20 May 2002, the deadly ethnic conflicts in Central Kalimantan between indigenous Dayaks and Madurese migrants claiming hundreds of lives, the civil unrest between the Aceh Separatist Movement and the Indonesian military that prompted the Indonesian government to issue a military rule, the Indian Ocean tsunami aftermath in Aceh, Mount Merapi eruptions in central Java, as well as the aftermaths of other man-made and natural catastrophes.
He has also participated in numerous photo exhibitions in Indonesia and overseas.

2011 – Gold Medal award in the category Nature/Environmental photo series from Prix De La Photographie Paris (PX 3).
2011 – 2nd place in the category Environmental Picture Story from USA National Press
Photographers Associations’ Best of Photojournalism Contest.
2011 – Gold Medal award in the category Disaster News Stories from China International Press Photo Contest (CHIPP).
2011 – 3rd place in the Science/Natural History category from Missouri School of Journalism’s Picture of The Year International (POYi).
2011 – 3rd place in the General News Picture story category from Missouri School of Journalism’s Picture of The Year International (POYi).
2011 – Award of Excellence in Spot News category from Missouri School of Journalism’s Picture of The Year International (POYi).
2009 – PDN Photo Annual Award in the Photojournalism & Documentary Photography category.
2009 – 3rd Place in Local Personality Portrait category from the National Press Photographers Association’s Best Of Photojournalism (NPPA BOP) contest in USA.
2008 – United Nations FAO Media Partnership Grant to document the Human Faces of Avian Influenza in Indonesia.
2008 – Honorable Mention in the National Geographic’s All Roads Photography awards program.

2007 – World Press Photo Millennium Development Goals Book Project Grant.
