Filipino journalist Mick Basa roves around Mindanao for stories focusing on development and the environment. His career in journalism began in 2009 as a reporter for Mindanao Times, few months after finishing an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication minor in Sociology at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Currently, he produces multimedia features for DavaoToday.com and writes reports for Rappler.com.

He was a news reporter for Manila Bulletin for two years, ending in 2012. During his stint with Bulletin, he reported two major disasters that hit Northern Mindanao and Compostela Valley this year. He spoke to communities hit by the Tropical Storm Washi and how they were able to rise from the grim catastrophe. He was also sent to Kuala Lumpur to cover the 53rd international Qur’an reading Competition. As a business reporter, he monitored developments in the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area, and its effects to the Philippines’ economic growth.

Basa is also a part-time lecturer at the Ateneo de Davao University’s Mass Communication programme. He has been invited to train campus journalists in Southern Philippines as a former member of the Campus Editors Guild of the Philippines. In college, he edited the student-run newspaper Atenews.

The 25-year-old journalist based in Davao organised the first TEDx event outside the Philippine capital — TEDxADDU.

This year, he received a full scholarship grant to study at the Konrad Adenauer Asian Centre for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University.
