Ben Brody is a New England-born photojournalist based in Northampton, Massachusetts. He graduated from Boston’s New England School of Photography in 2001, just months before the Sept. 11 attacks. Although trained as a fine arts photographer, after witnessing the destruction in New York firsthand he shifted his focus to documenting the battles that raged in its wake.

Ben photographed for more than two years in Iraq, covering Baghdad’s descent into sectarian chaos and 2007’s troop surge. His photographs have been published in the New York Times, GlobalPost, Washington Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Savannah Morning News, USA Today, AARP Bulletin and many others. In 2010, Ben spent five months covering the surge of 30,000 American troops into southern Afghanistan.

He has documented paramilitary and military action in the little-covered separatist war in Thailand’s Deep South, police operations in Charlottesville, Virginia, hunters of rare amphibians in Georgia, guerrilla Cannabis growers in Maine, Afghan volleyball fanatics, lonely guards on the Iranian border, the blazing neon of Shinjuku, El Salvadorian soldiers handing out Beanie Babies in the Shiite heartland, subsistence fishermen in the Venezuelan jungle, sport fishermen in Gloucester, and mountaineers who prefer to climb in hurricane-force winter winds. He is an alumni of the Eddie Adams Workshop.
