leonard "red" jackson

in 1948 gordon parks photographed red jackson, then 16 years old, leader of the midtowners gang in harlem. parks' photoessay ran in life magazine in november 1948. red jackson is now 75 years old and is the last member of the midtowners alive. he recently got off parole for conspiracy to distribute narcotics, and is struggling to survive without hustling in the street.

in 2007 lyric was a recipient of the Howard Chapnick grant for the Advancement of Photojournalism, administered by the Eugene Smith memorial fund. the grant funds were received based on her co-creation of the bridge project, an organization that brings photojournalism instruction to youth in communities lacking photographic opportunities.
