Alan Mitchell began his life-long love of photography as a high school student in Edmonton, Canada. He rediscovered his passion and picked up the camera again after 20 years in 2001 and has been actively engaged in the creation of images since. A resident of New Mexico since 1995, he finds inspiration in the local culture, landscape, and things observed in his travels to various locations around the world. Whether it is focusing on the details of nature, the interaction and expression of humanity on the earth or taking in the vast expanse of a landscape, Alan’s eye sees beauty in the unusual and the unexpected. Capturing those images is the essence of his work.
Currently he is still working in film, and digital formats for image capture. After years in conventional darkrooms printing BW images the conversion to digital photographic printing was undertaken in 2003. Recent advances in digital printing technology have brought new levels of personal appeal to his photographic works. Previously, the images always seemed to be lacking ‘something’. Archival Pigment printing now holds the power to express faithfully the artistic intentions without compromise.
Today all commercial work is completed with digital capture unless expressly requested.
His personal images come from a mix of film and digital formats. While digital capture has come a long way, it does not possess the qualities or processes of film. Film offers the meditative peace and slow pace vital to his creative process.
