Deirdre Hamill has been a professional photographer for more than twenty years. As a photojournalist, she has covered a wide variety of subjects, from major American sporting events and US border conflicts to immense historical shifts in Europe. She is a native New Yorker who began her newspaper career at the Las Vegas Sun in 1987. In 1989, she took a three-month sabbatical to Eastern Europe and the USSR to record the collapse of Communism. She then worked at the Poughkeepsie Journal, before joining the staff of the San Antonio Light. When that newspaper folded in 1993, she moved on to Phoenix and has been on the staff of the Arizona Republic for more than fifteen years. Her deepest, most enduring passion is for travel, and using photography to evoke the sense of a “foreign†place, from culture, architecture and landscape to candid imagry of the people. This passion for the unfamiliar has been in her bones from an early age. As a young child, she lived in Puebla, Mexico, and later attended schools in England and Switzerland. She has wandered with a camera throughout Europe, the American Southwest, Canada, as well as the urban canyons of New York City. In recent years, she has traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, including mutliple destinations in Colonial Mexico and the far reaches of South America. deirdre Hamill 's current location:
