About
Markus Lokai, born in 1970 in Düren, Germany, studied photography at the Saint-Luc Institute of Fine Arts in Liege, Belgium. He earned recognition for his 1996 thesis project on the situation of political refugees in Germany. After finishing his studies, Lokai started working with magazines and newspapers in Cologne and nationwide. Lokai’s 2002 series “Crime Scene” documents the scene following a murder in the street. It was exhibited at the Van der Grinten gallery in Cologne and selected by jury for the international photography festival “Fotosummer Stuttgart 2005.” Lokai is one of the founders of the international photographers’ collective Luna, created in July 2003. Each year Luna participates in the photojournalism festival “Visa pour l’image” in Perpignan, France. Since 2006, Luna is distributed in Italy by the agency Contrasto and in France by the agency Rea. Lokai’s primary goal is to tell a story through his pictures. This goal has led him to, among other places, Egypt (2002) and Normandy (2004), where he traversed the beaches with two other Luna members to discover the traces of D-Day 60 years later.
