<title>Although up to 6 women can deliver at the same time in the delivery room, the room is constantly filled with scorching screams or self-comforting songs. Sometimes, patients have to wait while wailing on the floor for an empty bed. Leaving no choice for women who just delivered to pack and leave minutes after delivering. <title>Yolette is 22 years old. She was shot six times in the stomach during a violent clash between the MINUSTAH and local gangs in Cit&#195;&#169; Soleil in December 2006. At the time she was 6 months pregnant with her first child, and one of the bullets killed her unborn baby. She can no longer have children. When she arrived at the hospital, the triage team assumed that it was too late to save her. Yolette had several surgeries during her two-month stay at the hospital, fighting infections, fever and pain. She had no family or friends to look after her, as everyone assumed she would die. With medical care she held on to life and survived. When this photo was taken in May 2007, she was back at the hospital to have her last stitches removed, seven months after the incident. Port-au-Prince, Haiti. 1/JUNE/2007

<title>Terre, a mix of salt, clay and butter is eaten by the poor to fool their hunger. The mixture is moulded into a disc of about 2 cm thick and the width of a CD, then let to dry in the sun before being sold to the population of the slums. This practice is becoming common practice among the poorest of the population and is not without health complications. The ingestion of &quot;Terre&quot; increases the risks of appendicitis, which is becoming the number one cause of surgical interventions throughout Haiti. <title>Jeanise Jean Gilles, 38, had her second set of twins; two girls.

When I walked into the delivery room and met Jeanise, she was so thin that I found it hard to believe she was about to give birth. I was even more incredulous to learn that she was having twins.

Jeanise was admitted to Jude Anne Hospital because she had a history of hypertension, which can lead to eclampsia. She was also there because this was her sixth pregnancy (and her second set of twins).

Though I could see the pain on her face, she didn&#226;&#8364;&#8482;t complain. She gave birth to two tiny girls, each less than 2kg. The newborn sisters clung to each other as the nurses cleaned them. Jeanise seemed happy.

Malnourished herself, with few resources and six other children, I wondered how Jeanise will feed these two new mouths. Jude-Anne Hospital, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 24/MAY/2007.</title>
