Waiting for the next fare, Ueno, Tokyo: Out last night shooting some taxi shots for a project I have on the go at the moment. Made friends with a few of the fellas up by the Park exit of Ueno station. This shot worked out nicely; the row of taxis waiting for fares and the lights of Ueno in the background - with some of the platforms of Ueno station visible in between. Nikon D300 Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8

The Man Behind the Mask, Shibuya, Tokyo: The little white masks are commonplace here; people wear them if they have a cold and don't want to give it to other people. Or, when they have hayfever. This fella dropped his mask for a few seconds and turned around to see me there.

Time to Reflect, Shibuya, Tokyo: Never a dull moment stood at the traffic lights by the crossing in Shibuya. One of the reasons I live the 85mm f/1.4 lens for Nikon is the way it can really pick out details and blow the rest of the frame's focus right out when the aperture is wide open.

Granny in her night-gown, Yoyogi-hachiman, Tokyo: Odd things happen to me in Tokyo when I get lost. After I finished my Japanese class at Tokai University, I took the train to Yoyogi-koen station, walked through the park and into Shibuya. I was aiming for my favourite bar and got lost in the backstreets, ending up back in Yoyogi at Hachiman station. Just as I was approaching the station this old lady ambled out of a doorway and into the street. She looked totally confused, almost as though she expected to look up and be in her living room. Dressed only in her pink night-gown, equipped with shopping bag and walking stick, she wandered at a snail's pace along the middle of the main street. Bless her. Hope she got home OK. Nikon D300 85mm f/1.4 AF D

Strawberry Girl, Ikebukuro, Tokyo: I really wanted to get a shot of this girl from the front, as her dress was really impressive. But, she flashed past me quickly so I had to settle with this shot - from behind. She looked like a giant strawberry gateaux!

Crossing, Ikebukuro, Tokyo: Out with some friends one friday night, walking and shooting. Didn't take many pics myself. I think I have grown out of the "shooting in packs" thing. These days I just prefer to be out on my own. Selfish? Dunno, just feel that a pack of six gaijin photographers wandering around can be intimidating and scares people away.

A Northern Lights Effect, Minami-Oi, Tokyo: Can't sleep so when I am bored, I shoot! And I love the way that when there is low-ish cloud in Tokyo, all the different types of light illuminate the base of it so crazily. Tonight we appear to have a 'northern lights' effect going on out over the Bay [at right] :-) Five-shot bracket based around an exposure of 6-seconds at f9. The slight bowing in on the left side is not really the lens' fault. Our balcony wall is not flat on the top so the camera was pointing up and to one side a little. Corrected some of it out but didn't do too much to it. Merged in Photomatix. Nikon D300 Tokina 11-16mm lens

Hiding Behind the Lamp-post, Shibuya, Tokyo: another shot from near the crossing in Shibuya. I love standing there and just observing people. This guy was as transfixed with the large-screen TVs as I was with him.

Scenes from Bladerunner, Shibuya, Tokyo: this part of Japan has a particular feel of Ridley Scott's film, "Bladerunner' about it. Especially on nights when it rains and everyone comes out with their umbrellas.

Night Roadworks, Shimbashi, Tokyo: Myself and my wife had been out for a meal and were doing some late-night browsing of the shops in Ginza and Shimbashi on our way home. This fella was superbly lit up by the massive arc lights of nearby roadworks. Lots of odd colour castes going on here with all the different kinds of light, and impossible to balance for one or the other of them. But the effect is nice. Nikon D300 and 85mm f/1.4 AF D.
