The town, which has already been evacuated once this year, is facing permanent abandonment as successive fall storms in recent years have caused serious erosion to the villages' waterfront threatening the community's homes, fuel farm, and landing strip. The effect of the storms, which have struck the area for millenia, has become ever more grave as the sea ice which once shielded the island appears later each year as the result of warming temperatures.
