Commissioned to create a series of photographs depicted the people and places for which this Hong Kong-based NGO provides services, this work in progress examines life in Southwest China. Economic development in China is wildly uneven -- with the East Coast growing ever more wealthy, while rural areas in western and southern China remain mired in poverty. Yunnan is one of China's poorer provinces, with up to one third of the population living below the poverty line. Most people live as peasant farmers. Communities remain largely self-sufficient, and if anything, produce and people flow out of the countryside to the richer cities, never to return. The province is lauded for its colorful minority cultures and scenic beauty, and an infant tourism industry has sprung up to capitalize on these riches. However, Yunnan is also said to have China’s highest AIDS rates, especially along its border regions where people and heroin are trafficked through. A new, international highway from Singapore and Bangkok is being built and will eventually connect Kunming, the provincial capital, with Southeast Asia –- it is hoped this will bring further
