http://www.lightstalkers.org/galleries/contact_sheet/18749 Images by Sanjay Sharma IN SPLENDID ISOLATION The Changpas, the lesser known nomadic shepherds of Changthang---the northern most plains of Ladakh borderin Tibet, were living a life of splendid isolation for centuries. Or, so it was till troops of the Indian Army cut into their isolation to protect the borders. And, brought with them ‘civilisation’. The story was never the same again. This cold desert bordering China on the northern side and the Himachal on the southern side, is known as the Changthang, or as Chinese put it, ‘Chiang-Tang’. These plains, enveloped by high mountains, under clear blue skies have witnessed a slow metamorphosis. The area of Changthang is unsuitable for permanent settlement. It is a series of low ranges of hills with stormy surfaces and temperatures going as low as -35*C. Only the southern parts are covered by sparse vegetation of coarse grass with a few shrubs growing around the lakes. The population of Changpas consists more of men than women. This factor has made it common for two brothers to have a wife. The main settlement of Changpas, one of the oldest of the nine tribes of Ladakh, according to the Anthropological Survey of India is Karzok, around Lake Tso-Moriri, the second longest lake in Ladakh, surrounded by snow-clad mountains. Tsewant Yurgyal, the last Changpa king ruled this land and its people until 1947. Now, his son, Tsering Dorji is the symbolic head and one of the most respected men of the tribe. Dorji has relinquished his nomadic upbringing and taken up a job with the PWD as a caretaker of the only guest house in Karzok village. For Dorji, those old days are vanishing like a dream, like the morning mists that shroud the hills and valleys of his beloved land. The threat to his tribe’s nomadic, isolated life-style and centuries of tradition becomes more real with each pasing day. For the Changpas like Dorji, desperately clinging to the shreds of the past, the ancient history of his ancestors has begun to haunt him more than ever. The story narrated by his elders is of his ancestors being fearsome rulers who smeared the borders with enemy blood. But the days of glory was shortlived. They were defeated in a series of battles and forced to live a nomadic life in exile. The leaders swore that the tribe would settle down again only if they ruled the lands once more. It was during this period that they gave up Poi, an animistic religion and adopted Buddhism and began a life of peaceful co-existence with their animals. “This was the will of Buddhaâ€* says Dorji. He realizes that the old ways are giving way. His own life is changing slowly but surely. Once a rulers’ son, for whom money was never a requirement, he has had to settle for the job of a caretaker (chowkidar) for a salary of Rs. 2500/-. Tradition, centuries old is being eroded-losing out to technology. And, suddenly there is a divide between the refined and the raw. The Changpas exposed to the outside world now question their earlier life. The Changpas life-style is primarily centered around their livestock. They had learned to live in interdependence with their animals for centuries. Drinking their milk, eating their meat, wearing their furried coats. The Changpas and their animals move as one body, walking and living together. The tribe wanders across international boundries, into Tibetan villages spending days there with their herds, buying Chinese crockery, velvet, silk and medicines in exchange for Pashmina wool, butter and milk. The Changpas take pride in their unique way of life--- that they never settle down. Dorji meanwhile feels that this area is going to be more open to outsiders. He expects people “ to come and see and admire the way we live “. He says that the irony of it is that the tribe is slowly being brought under the plastic wrap of civilization. But he is perplexed uncertain whether he wants to be ‘civilised’ at the cost of centuries old tradition Would he want to lay down his life style in exchange for tourism which is encroaching, which would surely damage the only breeding ground of the bar-headed geese and other wildlife specific to this region ? Dorji knows that his dilemma will continue. And never end. Perhaps even if he is the last of his tribe.
