For the last century, canadian government established reserves trying to settle these nomads, forcing them to rely on the government support to sustain a living. The Anishnabe as they call them self are native community battling against serious social problems. Among them, sexual violence stay behind doors. The foundation of many selfdestructive habits, very few victims talks even when there is at least 26% case of sexual abuse in native communities, according to Statistics Canada. 28 October 2008 - Winneway, Qc, Canada. Elizabeth Makimoot, 78, live alone in her house. Speaking only her native language, she feels lonely. Very few of the younger generation still speaks Anishnabe language, creating a gap with the elders and contribute to loss of traditional values where women were respected. First Nation Poeple believed that women share the same spirits that Mother Earth.

Due to the Indian law of Canada, wich limit their right of property, women have difficulties to protect their children against family violence. Having few options, women victim of violence, stay in the marital house with their children. Social Service has to take the children away even though mothers and grand mothers take good care of them.

31 july 2008 - Winneway, Qc, Canada. The Long Point First Nation has been doing without a police service for 2 years, jeopardizing security in the community. The Band council asked for a budget of 500 000$ a year, while the Canadian Department of Indians and Northern Affairs was offering 400 000$ a year. Since there was no agreement, the band has to rely on the SQ, Quebec provincial police, to provide security and order. That service cost 1,8 millions $ a year without a constant presence.

He says that life in the village is difficult because of all the traditional loss. He doesn't like to be witness of younger generation living without senses. He goes into the bush as often as he can, living from the land. Alphonse spend many days in the bush, finding that living that way makes more senses to him. He tried, without much success, to teach the traditional way of life to younger generation, hoping that it would connect them to traditional values. Himself find it easier while living in the bush, as he has difficulties finding his way in the village. Loss of traditions and values are among causes of sexual and family violence in Native community.
