The number of cases rose to 444 this week as the World Health Organization announced that Cambodia had received 300,000 doses of (A) H1N1 flu vaccine by the end of November. The World Bank, European Union and Japanese government have offered Cambodia US$11 million to fight the spread of swine flu. The death toll of A/H1N1 flu in Cambodia has increased to five. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and bird (avian) genes and human genes. Cambodia has increased its surveillance for unusual respiratory illnesses in hospitals, health centres and airports. Authorities are scanning passengers for fever at airports (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap) and land borders (Thailand, Vietnam) to stem the spread of swine flu.
