http://www.lightstalkers.org/galleries/contact_sheet/23492 "Albanian Survival" In 1991 Albania was a miserable country showing in every bit of it the wounds of a tormented, elongated communist regime. Apparently it was a crushed regime, but the very truth was that it was never replaced with a novel one and everything was in a state of limbo, a prolonged agony. The Albanians were fleeing the country en masse; the collective propriety, the one supposed to be people’s such as the farms, factories, plants, cooperatives, some institutions were put under a constant and merciless destruction process. Every thing was subject of robbery. But the personal drama of the people, the state of their collective depression was much worse than the state of the economy itself. The new demagogues were showing up in the political scene. They were eager to demonstrate verbally their opposition towards the old communists and to promise the change within a very short period of time. Nonetheless they could not help when it came to stopping the hemorrhage of the Albanians crowds aiming at leaving their country at any costs to build a new life in Europe. In this atmosphere, in fall 1991, Jutta Benzenberg came for the first time in Albania. She took photographs all around the country, in south and north, in Durrës,Shkodër taking pictures of landscapes, roads, abandoned fields, but she was mostly focused on peoples’ faces. The ones fighting persistently to survive in the middle of the hardships and misfortune; veterans in crossroads, ex political prisoners or opponents of the communist regime sent by force to live in remote areas of the country and in total isolation still feeling under pressure and not free. From her work together came at light a number of reportages, exhibitions and the first book “Albanian survivalâ€* published in Salzburg in 1993. http://www.lightstalkers.org en-us
