Tribal and governmental officials are trying to find ways to build contemporary structures and attract caregivers to the region.

Starting at a rather early age, boys are engaged in the care of the cattle; including leading small herds in and out of the villages, like Alian near Bor, for daily grazing.

Markets like this one in Bor, are the main source of goods and supplies for people living in South Sudan's cities. Goods are almost entirely imported through Uganda. South Sudan lacks direct oceanic access.

Large, military surplus trucks are generally used to supply markets like this one in Bor. Roads in very poor condition dictate the use of heavier and heavier vehicles to traverse them; which in turn causes more damage to inter-city roads.

Roads in South Sudan are very poor, and one of the largest hindrances to development. A 100-mile stretch between Juba and Bor can take 10 hours to travel, and this track from Bor to Alian village required three hours to cover the 25 miles.
