<title>Watchers at the gate to the inpatient ward of the small bush hospital found in Doropo, Cote d'Ivoire. Only those with a valid reason are allowed in the hospital during the two weeks that the volunteers from the American NGO, the Hanna Project, perform much-needed surgeries. Cases are saved up throughout the year and are told to return in February when the American doctors come to town.

<title>The guardien, the guard at the Hopital de Doropo gate, keeps peace and orderliness by allowing only those who are ill or who have a note from another medical institution into the hospital to be seen by the visiting American doctors and nurses. Availability of trained medical personnel in rural areas of the West African country of Cote d'Ivoire leave a lot to be desired. This small bush hospital is overseen by an Ivorian-trained nurse, similar to a nurse practitioner in the US.

<title>Crippled since birth, this Ivorian man is incredibly excited as today he will receive a cart with which he can move about much more effectively, much more easily. The cart was provided by an organization called PET--personal energy transportation--and will give him mobility he has never had.

This work was done in conjunction with the Hopital de Doropo, a small bush hospital in the rebel-occupied northeastern corner of Cote d'Ivoire.</title>

<title>Waiting is just a part of life in this rural part of West Africa. Family members sit outside the hospital room of an elderly woman who had surgery on her foot after almost losing part of it from a bicycle wreck. She had been perched up on the seat as her son pedaled the bike headed to this very hospital when her foot got stuck in the spokes. Upon arrival, doctors performed surgery inserting a metal rod in order to save the toe. She eventually recovered fully, as feisty and full of spunk as before the surgery!

The masses turned out to be supernumerary mammary glands, and were successfully removed by a volunteer medical team with the Hanna Project NGO.

<title>&quot;Bon-bon&quot; is the constant refrain from this trio--often joined by others who have escaped chores and mom's watchful eye in order to hang out at the back door of l'hopital de Doropo. A sense of humor, too, as they began naming the many American volunteers who were rushing to and fro past their vantage point: Madame Bon Bon (the volunteer pharmacist who always had pockets filled with candy); Madame Vit-vit (coordinator of the volunteer medical personnel on the Hanna Project team, know for her graceful scurrying from one problem to the next); and Madame Photo (moi, obviously! The only nurse/translator with two cameras on at all times).

This small bush hospital is located in the rebel-controlled northeastern corner of Cote d'Ivoire. The medical volunteers were with an American NGO (non-governmental organization), the Hanna Project, that specializes in humanitarian and medical aid in hard to reach and hardly reached places around the globe.</title>

<title>Happy and healthy, this baby was not at all afraid of the very pale visiting strangers in her village as they treated the sick and injured in an outdoor clinic--she smiled and cooed and allowed the visitors to hold her. Note the necklace of cowrie shells--it is a talisman prepared by the local fetisher usually for health or safety of the wearer.

<title>Ancient and feisty--the two that come to mind when thinking about this elderly Lobi woman who was treated by medical personnel with the Hanna Project at the Doropo Hospital in Cote d'Ivoire, February 2010. She'd had surgery on her foot after almost losing part of it in a bicycle wreck. Perched up on the bicycle seat as her adult son pedaled the bike, her foot got stuck in the spokes. Upon arrival, doctors performed surgery inserting a metal rod in order to save the toe. She eventually recovered fully, as feisty and full of spunk as before the surgery. </title>
