<title>&quot;Harijan: The Son of the God&quot; (by adnan)</title>
    <link>http://www.lightstalkers.org/galleries/contact_sheet/25975</link>
<description>Badal Das's dream is quite simple. He dreams that unlike himself, unlike his father, unlike his grandfather and unlike every member of his family for centuries, Kwaran Das, his eight years old son, who is the youngest of his four children, grows up to be something other than a sweeper. He has three sons; the eldest one works as cleaner in a garment factory, another son does't like anything except playing music in worshipping the God Rama and his youngest son is in class III in a school authorized by City Corporation. Badas Das is a Harijan, a member of so called 'untouchable' caste that sits at the very bottom of traditional Hindu community. In India, Mahatma Gandhi gave the name 'Harijan' or 'the son of God' to this community of untouchable people who work as sweepers and cleaners to our public place clean.
Like Badal Das, about 5.5 millon Harijans have been staying all Bangladesh from the British colonial period. The Harijans say that their ancestors were brought here (now Bangladesh) from Hyderabad of southern India by the British Empire to perform manual work.
This community's first language remains Hindi, but not Bangla. Still now, their attire, food habit, culture, worshipping and almost everything is different from the other upper caste Hindus and obviously from the other people of Bangladesh. In 1853, after the Great Indian Peninsula Rail Company established the first railway system through Indian subcontinent, the British colonial authority lured these untouchables of having better job and facilities in railway stations and provincial government offices in all over the continent. But eventually they were made to do same 'unclean work' as before such as cremating the dead, sweeping gutters, cleaning latrines, removing dead animals from road etc. In Bangladesh, there untouchable people have been engaged in cleaning profession by birth. It's a tradition that if ones father is sweeper, he will be sweeper as well.

This situation of this community exemplifies racial discrimination which is specifically based on profession. While historically, Harijans have been employed in sweeping and cleaning public space, today even these jobs are slowly being taken away from them and given to mainstream people. The recruitment of sweepers in government jobs has been decreased. The scope to enter into the government jobs has been shrinking day by day. In most of the cases, the non-professionals have been capturing the posts of sweepers by offering bribes. According to the international convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination (CERD) agreement, the government is bound to fulfill the basic needs of employment, housing, education and health care services of the lower caste people. The government and semi-government offices have been recruiting non-professional people as sweepers, though there is a rule for recruitment of sweepers from this community. They have been deprived of this government job as the government has decided that no man would be appointed as sweeper without having a class eight-pass certificate. 'My son won't get any other job except being a sweeper like me, but now he is not so hopeful of that also as he is having the certificate of class eight-pass'*, said Ratan Das, a sweeper in Chittagong.

Harijans are politically, socially, economically and mentally isolated from the mainstream community. For instance, they cannot eat in restaurants of general people, nor perform rituals with rest of the society. Jhankar Das, a Harijan, alleged that their children are neglected and harassed in school as they are from sweeper families. There is no school particularly for them and also no teacher who is expert of their language. The children in Harijan community learn Hindi beside Bangla at home. Some of the Harijans have sent their children to nearby schools by changing their identity and address.

Badal says, 'There is a wall that surrounds us, we can't see it, we just can feel it'.</description>
