Like Mithun Das about 5.5 million “untouchable” sweepers have been staying all over Bangladesh from the British colonial period. Their job remains same till today, they perform the ‘unclean work’ such as cremate the dead, clean latrines, remove the dead animals from the road, sweep the gutters etc.

Kalicharan Panda Maharaj died at the age of 97 in a sweeper colony in Chittagong. He was one of the five headmen in this colony. It is said that he was the last man with Indian nationality, who migrated from India to Bangladesh before the partition in 1947.

Swapna Das got admitted in a clinic with having severe pain in stomach. Because of this, she cannot go for her work for last 3 days. She is very afraid of cut out her name from list of workers in City Corporation since she is a temporary worker. She is working for City Corporation for 9 years but still today her job is in temporary basis not permanent though by law the job should be permanent after 90 days of work.
