In 1940 the Nazis established a Gestapo prison in the small fortress at the old Hapsberg garrison town of Theresienstadt - now called Terezin - in northern Czechoslovakia. 32,000 political prisoners passed through it's gates, 2,500 of them were tortured to death or executed.
