"Pakistan Floods" (by Eduardo Diaz)

Eight year old Kamram’ sister Faheema looks trough the transparent plastic tent that gives them shelter under the heavy downpour that continues falling after the floods that washed away their house in Charsadda, north west Pakistan. Having lost everything they have, his father and uncle built this tent on the rubble of what was their home. Without any other place to go, the family are waiting for the monsoon to leave before they start reconstructing their lives.

Along the Grant Trunk Road, the main link for goods to the Afghan border a improved refugee camp have been build in the middle of the two lanes. Living in a portion of dirt not more than five meters wide and surrounded day and night by trucks and high speed traffic, some former inhabitants of Pabbi now shifted to the tents, stand at the side of the road asking the traffic to stop and give help or charity.

A crowd of refugees surround a truck loaded with USAID flour sacks, part of the international aid that Pakistan is receiving to overcome the tragedy. Dozens of persons cannot get anything and find difficulties to feed their families. Many people complaint against the lack of control delivering the aid; they say people that have not been affected by the flood are taking advantage collecting this aid for free and selling later in the market.

Ashfaq feed his three months old daughter Manuja, who is suffering from chest infection, fever and vomits. Her mother, Samina, stop producing milk to feed the child after being trapped without food for many days at their house surrounded by floods and have to give poisoned water to prevent the baby from die of dehydration. Now they are living in a school in Charsadda that gives then shelter while the baby recovers from her diseases.

At the government high school of Charsadda, nearly 350 families have find shelter after the floods have been devastated their houses. In the door of the principal’s office, the people make queue to get the food coupons that let them obtain a ration of aid for their families.

Fawad Ali, a twenty year old teenager who was engaged to his fiancée Rabia, have to leave his home in a remote village in the north of Charsadda to bring food to the family, isolated by the water for the last three days. Fawad and his cousin try to cross the bridge over the Swat River to reach the near village, but the over flooded and powerful current takes him downstream. His cousin manages to reach the house and inform the family of the disgrace. After that, twenty-five relatives try to find the body of the boy for three days along the bank of the river. Murad Ali a forty five year old father of other three boys, looks grief-stricken a picture of his lost son.

In a plastic self made tent, a volunteer distribute packets with food to the inhabitants of this refugee camp in the outskirts of Charsadda, north west of Pakistan. Most of the people here comes from a former Afghan refugee camp settled at the other side of the stream bank, and completely washed away by the floods.
