    <title>&quot;KOSHI TRAGEDY&quot; (by Sailendra Kharel)</title>
    <link>http://www.lightstalkers.org/galleries/contact_sheet/28333</link>
<description>The Koshi River, also known as Saptakoshi includes seven major rivers --Sun Koshi, Tama Koshi, Dudh Koshi, Indrawati, Likhu, Arun and Tamar. The river breached its eastern embankment 12 km north of the barrage near midnight on August 18, 2008 and immediately inundated villages in five Village Development Committees (VDCs) -- West Kushaha, Haripur, Sripur, Laukahi, and Bokraha of Sunsari District of Nepal.

Fourteen Districts in Bihar, India were inundated by the Koshi flooding. Following this tragedy, Eastern Nepal remained out of road link with the capital Kathmandu for more than three months. The flooding had washed away East-West Highway in many parts and also fertile lands of Terai, which is the major part of the country for agricultural production.

Reports said that about 60,000 people in Nepal and more than 2 million people in India were displaced by the devastation caused by the Koshi. More than a dozen people were killed in Nepal and more than forty died in India.

The Koshi barrage was constructed on the Nepal side of the Indo-Nepal border for the purpose of irrigation, flood control and hydropower generation between 1959 and 1963 following the indo-Nepal Koshi agreement 1954. It has 45 spurs, 500 m apart, on the eastern embankments in Nepal.

The main cause of the breaching of embankment was lack of required repair and maintenance works on the Koshi barrage and its embankment. India is responsible for the maintenance, cleaning and siphoning of the barrage, as per the bilateral agreement of 1954.

The Koshi is a 729 km long river, originating near Mt. Everest from the world&#8217;s highest glaciers &#8212; on the Tibetan plateau and in Nepal. The Koshi enters Bihar (the Northern most State of India) and finally ends at the confluence of Gangas, travelling from Nepal.
