Fishing life: People in Arugam Bay say- “we do not get much fish as we had earlier. Perhaps, Tsunami has done something to the sea and fishes are gone.” Others say- “ after Tsunami foreigners gave boat and net to many people, so huge number of people fishing now, as a result numbers of catch have dropped.” The area was devastated by Asian tsunami. Though fishes are scarce, fishing continues as it was for ages. It remains as a major source of livelihood here in east coast of Sri Lanka. Not only locals but also people from other areas come to fish here. They live in temporary huts called “Wadia”. Most of the fishermen do not have their own boat and net.
