<title>The Jerusalem Gate is the entrance to the Navgaon cemetery and memorial in Alibaug. This is an important place for the Bene Israel (Children of Israel) who believe that their ancestors were shipwrecked here and buried in the cemetery by those who survived.</title>

<title>It is believed that the shipwreck took place over 2000 years ago and since then the Bene Israel community has lived in isolation. They followed a few outward practices of Judaism which they remembered and passed on over the centuries until they were finally discovered by traveling Jews. Later they were trained by the Cochini and Baghdadi Jews as well as Christian Missionaries
in Judaism and Hebrew.</title>

<title>The Bene Israelis have their own unique Jewish &#8211; Indian culture. They have a special reverence for Elijah the Prophet (Eliahu Ha'Navi). The Malida is an offering to Prophet Elijah for his blessings or to express gratitude. The ceremony begins with recital of prayers followed by a serving of beaten rice (poha), fruits, spices and flowers which is shared with everyone present at the ceremony.</title>

<title>Rabbi Chanoch Gechtman lights the towering Hanukkah menorah at Mumbai&#8217;s Gateway of India monument. This tradition was started by Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, the directors of Chabad-Lubavitch of Mumbai. They were killed during one of the worst terrorist attacks to strike India. Rabbi Chanoch and his wife Leiky continue Holtzbergs' work in Mumbai.</title>

<title>Ephraim Moses and his partner perform at the Khai Fest, 2010 which took place after a two year break. Festivities were canceled last minute in 2008 after the Chabad Rabbi and his wife were killed in the horrific terrorist attacks. Ephraim feels the attacks gave the Jewish community a new identity. People are now aware of the existence of Jews in India. Moses loves Mumbai and doesn't want to make Aliyah to Israel but sometimes finds it difficult to explain to his friends and colleagues about his culture and religious background as they are completely ignorant.</title>

Traditionally Jewish women made the Matzot however due to lack of interest today this task is undertaken by non &#8211; jewish women. Shouts of 'Matzo Matzo' fill the air after every ball of dough is flattened into round disks to signal the boy to collect it for baking.</title>

<title>Once the dough is rolled out it is put in this open oven called Tandoor. They make around 700 to 800 Matzot in a day. The number of Matzot being produced has considerably reduced due to the dwindling number of people in the community. At least one Jewish person from the Sassoon Trust is always present to overlook the process so that it's made according to the Jewish customs.</title>

Post the preparation of the Matzot, they are counted and stored in one of the rooms in the Magen David Synagogue. The compound of the Magen David houses two Jewish schools, a free dispensary, the Sassoon guest house and an erstwhile Mikwah. Ironically the schools are attended mostly by muslim children.</title>

<title>Siona Benjamin is a painter based in America originally from Mumbai. Her work reflects her background of being brought up Jewish in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim India. In her paintings she combines the imagery of her past with the role she plays in America today, making a mosaic inspired by both Indian miniature paintings and Jewish and Christian illuminated manuscripts. She is giving a talk to the WIZO India members about her journey and inspiring them to be proud of their Indian Jewish heritage.</title>

<title>Rachel aunty, as I like to call her, teaches her granddaughter Marathi the mother tongue of all Bene Israel people while her husband reads the paper. Her daughter married a Bene Israel from Ahmedabad, Gujarat and so her granddaughter knows Gujarati and not Marathi. She and her husband live in a chawl behind the Tipheret Israel Synagogue. A chawl is a building with several single rooms and usually shared toilets on each floor quintessential to Mumbai. The room serves as an all purpose place for dining, cooking and sleeping. Quite a few Bene Israel families in Mumbai live in these modest accommodations. Rachel aunty has visited Israel several times and now that her children are settled, she and her husband might consider making Aliyah.</title>

<title>Diana Pingle, Rachel aunty's neighbhour, sings traditional Bene Israel Biblical songs in Marathi and is known in the community for it. In fact she has also a professionally recorded CD of her songs. Her husband passed away a few years ago. Her children are well settled and drop in to check on her. She visits and stays with them occasionally. She used to be a municipal school teacher and lives off her pension now. Her house like most Jewish homes has traditional oil lamps, memorabilia from Israel, the ten commandments and the photograph of Prophet Elijah on a chariot, a special reverence for the Bene Israel community.</title>

<title>Inside the Chendamangalam Synagogue there are several panels on display with photographs and texts showcasing the rich history of the Jews of Kerala. Most synagogues in Kerala have similar traditional architectural features with Malayali influences: a central bimah of brass or silver metal on a concrete or stone base, an ark on the western wall, a balcony above the eastern entry to the sanctuary that is used by the Reader on certain holidays. Behind the balcony is the women's gallery, with a stairway leading up to it, usually from outside the building.</title>

<title>The Jews who fled the Inquisition in Europe reached Cochin and found protection under its benevolent maharajah, Rama Verma. The newcomers were called paradesis or White Jews. Rama Verma gifted them land where they built the Paradesi Synagogue in 1568. The synagogue shares the same wall with the Mattancherry Temple and the clock tower of the synagogue can be seen from the Mattacherry palace also known as the Dutch palace. It is open to visitors, except on the Jewish Sabbath and holidays. The Sabbath takes place if they secure a minyan which is usually possible as Cochin is a popular tourist destination.</title>

synagogue from the women's gallery. All synagogues in India have a balcony or at least a separate gallery for women to worship from. The Ezra family dealing in real estate became one of the most prominent Jewish families of Kolkata. They left a rich Jewish legacy behind. They built and funded three synagogues, a hospital, two schools and several other structures like Esplanade mansion that still stand today.</title>

<title>Magen David Synagogue is architecturally Italian and the towering floral-carved pillars were shipped from Paris by the Ezras. Its 140 feet high clock tower still dominates the Kolkata skyline. Its one of the most splendid synagogues in India. The din outside its periphery only heightens the calm you feel on its precincts. The synagogue is truly a picture of grandeur. Replete with an ornate Holy Ark, a beautifully-carved tebah (an elevated platform for reading the Torah), stained-glass windows shaped as the Tablets of Stone, Hebrew plaques and polished furniture, the immaculate interiors even in their silence reflect a sense of bustling times.</title>

<title>The Beth El and Magen David Synagogues speak of a celebrated legacy, while Neveh Shalome in the vicinity stands a crumbling structure. The Neveh Shalome Synagogue, Kolkata&#8217;s first-ever synagogue was established in 1826. chooses to live at the cemetery. His brother sometimes assists him in taking care of the needy or during burial ceremonies. His sister married a non-jew and was shunned by the Jewish society. She's divorced now and has a daughter making her the youngest member of the Jewish community in Kolkata.</title>

<title>The Esplanade mansion is the legacy that the Ezra family left behind. All that remains in Kolkata today are the reminders of a once thriving Jewish community - Jewish schools, the Beth El and Magen David Synagogues, the Ezra hospital, a few mansions, a period confectionery shop and
a clutch of 26 surviving Jews.</title>
