A distraught 40 year old Mavis Phacwane did not even have the chance to go into her shack to save any of her belongings including her identity document when an inferno which destroyed hundreds of shacks at Slovo Park settlement outside Crosby in western Johannesburg. Although firefighters battled to contain the blaze in heavy winds, it proved too much for them. The fire spread quickly and burnt down Phacwane's shack leaving her homeless. July 2003.
