"AILA after salinity; the agony continues" (by adnan)

After cyclone AILA ripped the south-western part of Bangladesh two years ago in 2009, sea water keeps many places in Satkhira District inundated twice a day as the major embankments remain broken. The continuous inflow of sea water has led hundreds of acres arable land into arid pasture where the bio-diversity is under threat. According to the agricultural scientists, it will take more than three to five years for the fallow lands to become cultivable again even after the embankments get fixed. The availability of usable drinkable water here is still scarce because of increasing salinity due to daily sea water flooding through these areas. These flooding also rising the rate of presence of salinity in the soil high up; the lands lost more or less of its fertility which leads people fleeing up middle of the country for work. According to agricultural scientist, it will take more three to five years for the salinity to be decreased depending on the rainfall and repairing the embankments. Thousands of acres of agricultural land are turning into a vast wasteland and the biodiversity of these parts of the country is under threat due to increasing salinity in these areas.
