His father left Uganda during the Amin years - he was educated in Kenya, Ireland and the UK, and his subsequently lived in New Zealand and Thailand. Many expat Ugandan's are returning with capital and skills, looking both for opportunities and chance to return home.

Repairing a monitor, Fortress computer store, Kampala Road, Kampala. The owner travels to China, four times a year to bring back a quater of a container-load of old computers. A typical machine might be eight years old and retail for as little as $120. Broken machines are canabalised for parts to make others work.

A software engineer at John Gosiers' startup "Appfrica". A recent graduate of Makerere Universitites' Computer Science department, is a convert to Open Source Software. Western software tools such a Microsoft servers are disproportionaly expensive compared with people and hardware costs in Africa. The price of bandwidth, more expensive than in developed markets also puts Ugandan's at a disadvantage: "We have to use Google like everyone else, to read documentation, to write code". Ambition is one thing not lacking: "We're going to be like India in 10 years. We're going to get those contracts".

Gorret Kabami receives her first mobile handset from a cousin living in Kuwait. Many of those in the family photo have moved to the city, or are part of the diaspora. Gorret says "without a phone - to get news, for example, when someone dies - they blow a whistle in the village and people come to talk. With no phone, people write a letter and take it to Kisoro. If they leave at 7am they will be there by 10 am. To receive a letter it could be sent [via] Joseph, the pastor."

AppLab's mobile banaa disease application, funced by the Grameen foundation. Banana wilt disease, a recent arrival on the farms of Uganda, is disaster: Matoke (a savory Banana) is both the staple food and main cash crop of many farmers. The average Ugandan eats XXkg of matoke a year.

Winston stands in his first wheat crop. Behind maize and banana plantation, the more usual crops of Ugandan farmers. Winston used an SMS information service from Grameen's Applab to find out how wheat could be grown in his family's area. Despite a fertile soil and good climate there is often little innovation from small farmers' choice of crop or technique. Farmers who diversify typically improve their food secuity as well their income.
