June 12, 2011 [DrikNEWS] - Thousands of police and RAB members patrolled the streets of Dhaka on Sunday as a 36 hour countrywide strike sponsored by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition party paralyzed much of the country. It is reported that at some vehicles were vandalized on Saturday evening as pro-hartal picketing. BNP and its ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami enforced the strike from 6:00 AM Sunday to 6 PM Monday demanding the caretaker system must stay in place for holding parliamentary elections. Police and RAB picked up more than 50 activists and leaders including Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Altaf Hossain Chowdhury of BNP and its party wings from several places including Paltan. Some stray cocktails were exploded near BNP party office. </title>

June 12, 2011 [DrikNEWS] - Thousands of police and RAB members patrolled the streets of Dhaka on Sunday as a 36 hour countrywide strike sponsored by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition party paralyzed much of the country. It is reported that at some vehicles were vandalized on Saturday evening as pro-hartal picketing. BNP and its ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami enforced the strike from 6:00 AM Sunday to 6 PM Monday demanding the caretaker system must stay in place for holding parliamentary elections. Police and RAB picked up more than 50 activists and leaders including Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Altaf Hossain Chowdhury of BNP and its party wings from several places including Paltan.
