    <description>BABYSITTING EGOLI

INTRODUCTION
The job description of a gallery guard is not very exciting nor it is well paid. It includes having to work hours, almost becoming part of the art collection while babysitting some of the country&#8217;s most valuable artworks.

Choreographer Robyn Orlin and myself collaborated in producing a site-specific multimedia performance at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) as part of the annual Dance Umbrella Festival. The project aimed to pay tribute to the gallery&#8217;s security staff, and all the great South African artists, past and present that ever showcased their work at this historical art museum.

JAG, is the biggest gallery in the sub-continent, a home to some of the most prized art works not just in the country but also in the world. The museum is popular for housing some of the most highly valued paintings, like the collection of the Dutch paintings of the 17th century. In recent years, the gallery has made a concerted effort to procure art works by contemporary South African artists.

The apartheid years of South Africa (1948-1994) saw a great diversity in SA art, ranging from landscape painting to abstract art, engagements with currents burgeoning in Europe and the United States, to a fiercely local sense of what it meant to be an artist in South Africa during those troubled times.

At the ripe age of 70, and after struggling for years to make a living out of his creations, Mandzula like many previously overlooked artists is finally reaping the fruits of his labour. He specialises in African traditional drums, which were used in ritual performances, like Ingoma to mark a burial.</title>

<title>In the 1930s, two women artists, Maggie Laubscher and Irma Stern, brought a different kind of subjective gaze to South African art by using the techniques and sensibilities of post-impressionism and expressionism. Their bold way with composition, and the assumption of highly personal point of view, rather scandalised those with old-fashioned concepts of acceptable art. Toni Morkel, the 'It Girl' of the avant-garde and Queen of Kisch celebrates the life of Irma Stern in this carefully crafted production.</title>
