    <title>&quot;Indian salt workers&quot; (by Poul Madsen)</title>
    <link>http://www.lightstalkers.org/galleries/contact_sheet/3443</link>
<description>The Little Rann of Kutch in India is a barren expanse of &#226;&#8364;&#339;desert&#226;&#8364;* dividing the Kutch region from the rest of Gujarat. This strange, flat land, salty and cracked in the dry season, stretches out as far as the eye can see. Bushes and trees hover above the surface in the distance but they&#226;&#8364;&#8482;re only heat mirages in a place where day temperatures can reach as high as 55 degrees C.
The area is punctuated by desolate salt farms, scattered encampments where people, known as &#226;&#8364;&#339;agarias&#226;&#8364;*, eke out a living by pumping up ground water and extracting the salt. During the dry season The Rann is a vast expanse of hard, dried mud but then with the start of the monsoon it is flooded first by sea water, then by fresh river water. </description>
