"Calais last stop before England" (by Benoit Chattaway)

This waste-ground , is located near the town center of Calais it's a stopping place for the refugees who arrive from Paris by train .It is also a place where the charities offer the lunch and give out the morning tea. Previously you could find a warehouse which was used as a sleeping area it was pulled down for hygiene and security reasons . The first migrants arrive at about 10 A.M. for the morning tea . While some drink their tea others take shelter in the volonteer worker's car or dance to music played by MP3 player plugged in the car's radio .

This Somalien migrant is one of the migrants that Calais has worn out. He's spent all of his money on unsuccesful trips to England and on alcohol he is now uncapable of paying a new journey to England. I met him on my first trip ( in december ) I took this photo in April .

Worn out by the police coming in the sleeping areas for the migrants, many refugees take the opportunity to sleep on the waste-ground knowing that the police usually don't come when the charities give out the food

At midday refugees gather in a waste-ground nearby the center of Calais , waiting for the food given by the charities at two p.m. ; the third migrant on the right with only one glove had a relation with a girl in his village , the familly of the girl wanted revenge so he had to leave his home and go to England . He told me in despair that the conditions in Calais were to hard and it was too cold so he was going to go back to Afghanistan and become a terrorist thinking it was the only choice that was left for him

Once the voluntary workers have left the waste-ground , it doesn't guarantee security for the migrants. That is why some of them spend the day on the railway tracks or in the dunes .

The tracks offer a certain safety because they are not public so the local police is not authorized to pursue migrants on them . These migrants have just started to run because they are about to leave the tracks .

This is where, at night, the refugees without any money try to climb onto the trucks that head to England. The crossroad makes the trucks stop for about thity seconds which sometimes just allows the migrants to climb on it

I was walking at the end of the line of migrants leading to the dunes when I saw all the migrants throwing all the clothes and sleeping bags that they had received and running in the opposite direction I managed to catch a glimpse of a small police car driving slowly towards the 150 people line . All the migrants started to climb the fence to take shelter in the factory.

The sleeping places are huts previously built by other migrants They call them "Jangles" which is the translation of forest in Farsi . The "jangles are separated by different ethnic groups . So there is a Pachtoune jangle, a Hazara jangle where you can also find tadjiks and Iranians. The east Africans sleep in squatts near the town center.

The dunes where the migrants sleep, are filled with rubish left by previouse migrants . Invisible from the motorway the small paths lead you to huts where they sleep. At night you sleep with the sound of the cars and you wake at the dampness of the sea .

The solid huts where made by migrants who have now made their way to England . one hut shelters four persons . But I once was invited to spend the night in one that could lodge ten people .

The huts are made out of wood, old fences, bin liners and are filled with rugs to insulate from the cold.

When you hear a whistle you know that the police is near . There is a night watcher that gives the warning. However the police mostly proceed outside the dunes where it is easier to chase them .

Watching for an possible arrival of the police, the migrants keep inside the border of the factory ready to run to an other exit located on the other side property.
