Soth Mom used to work in Karaoke bars so says she understands the issues the women face and hopes that the work she does will prevent other women from contracting HIV.

Chea Ny, 51, Pursat. In May 1996 Chea Ny was shot by the Khmer Rouge and contracted HIV in a subsequent blood transfusion. Her husband contracted HIV from her before she realised she was HIV+ and died in 2000 from an AIDS related illness. She started taking ARV medication very early, in 1998. At this time ARV medication cost $450-$500 a month and the cost of the treatment had to be covered by relatives who lived in the west. Over the years the cost of ARV treatment became cheaper as it became more widely available in Cambodia. For the last year it has been free for Chea Ny. Chea Ny works as a midwife and counsellor for people living with HIV and AIDS in Pursat.
