Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva launched a crackdown on a Bangkok protest after officially scrapping an offer to hold an early election this year in a bid to placate the anti-government demonstrators in which the protestors' chief military security adviser, Major General Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known by his nickname Seh Daeng, was shot in the head 13 May. Roadblocks by military and protesters have been set up around the Ratchapradong occupied zone causing traffic chaos and tense standoffs between soldiers and protesters.
