Get Together for LSers at NY Photo Festival - Now Set!

Ok, all. A little research has been done (including work by that original bar-fly, Erica McDonald), and a small group has concluded that this would be a good place and time:

The time: 6 pm. Friday, May 16 (get there on time and it’s Happy Hour until 7 p.m.)
The place: reBar, 147 Front Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn
The dress: WEAR A SCARF!

This will be really simple. Since we don’t know how many LS people will show up, we can’t rent a room in advance. So when you get in the place, ask the maitre d’ where the Lightstalkers have gathered. If he/she looks at you like you’re already drunk, just look around for some dweebs with scarves. If you don’t find a group, look for me (old fart, glasses, gray hair, Domke reporters bag, only one with scarf – I look pretty much like the photo at right). I’ll be there until the Awards ceremony at 8. Of course it will be a cash bar.

by Damaso Reyes | 13 May 2008 03:05 | Brooklyn, United States |
Neal, I assume you will be organizing in Charlottesville also. At least, I hope so.

by Charlie Mahoney | 13 May 2008 09:05 | Barcelona, Spain |
Water drinking bar-fly..I just wanna know what GAMES we can play. See, I stay sober and then I can kick butt whilst ya’ll get HAPPY

..this place is a called “a shrine to drinking”..see how my plotting begins early? Note the pool tables in the Low Rider room..

by erica mcdonald | 13 May 2008 13:05 | New York, United States |
Yay! It looks like I will finally make one of these…see ya’ll there. Erica, you can kick my tipsy butt at pool.

by Carolyn O'Neill | 13 May 2008 13:05 | New York City, United States |
Well, maybe Erica is not as big a barfly as I would make her out to be, but rumor has it that she is devastating at pool! Right, Erica?

And, yes, Charlie, I’ll probably get something together at LOOK3.

I guess I’m becoming the de facto cruise director, something I did not bargain for. But I believe in knitting together this fine community. If it takes booze to do so, so be it.

by Neal Jackson | 13 May 2008 17:05 | Washington, DC, United States |
Man, bummer, I am back to Mex on Friday morn… really wish I could make it…

If anybody else has time for a brew before then, Im always game!

I’ll be at the VII seminars, Mustafah. The price is definitely right!

by Neal Jackson | 13 May 2008 21:05 | Washington, DC, United States |
Neal, you can be our Captain Stubing, ranked higher than cruise director. I’m sure you’ve got a blue blazer.

by Preston Merchant | 13 May 2008 23:05 | New York, United States |
Preston…Is that Captain Stubing a reference to “Love Boat”? It’s been a while. :)

by Gregory Sharko | 13 May 2008 23:05 | Brooklyn, New York, United States |
I just wanna promote LOVE!

(Sorry, I’m a child of the 60s)

by Neal Jackson | 14 May 2008 02:05 | Washington, DC, United States |
I’ll try and make it. S. and I have plans but hopefully can make it there. Just watch out for Erica… she’s a shark! ;)
(Can I wear an ascot instead of a scarf? Or is that too much?)

by J-F Vergel | 14 May 2008 13:05 | New York City, NY, United States |
PRETTY PLEASE wear an ascot..and I suck at pool.

by erica mcdonald | 14 May 2008 13:05 | New York, United States |
Dear Neal,

I am a photographer from Timor-Leste/East Timor and just arrived in New York a few weeks ago. I’m not part of the NY Photo Festival but is it possible for me to join “Get Together for LSers” on Friday?

Cheers,
Carlito

by Ze'sopol Carlito Caminha | 14 May 2008 16:05 | New York, United States |
Absolutely..come one and all! No restrictions..

by erica mcdonald | 14 May 2008 16:05 | New York, United States |
...Except for the scarf… or ascot. ;)

by J-F Vergel | 14 May 2008 16:05 | New York City, NY, United States |
not possible, again…and I didnt even put my scarf away with the winter clothes. damn damn damn. someday the schedule gods will be kind to me, but they’d better hurry up before I drop dead from old age.

by Akaky | 14 May 2008 18:05 | Fifth Avenue, United States |
Thx Erica. I’ll bring my scarf for sure. C u all there guys.

by Ze'sopol Carlito Caminha | 14 May 2008 18:05 | New York, United States |
Akaky, as a high-flying international photojournalist, you should know that scarves are not to be tossed in with the winter clothes, for they are made of silk. You can stop by Hermes on Madison Avenue and pick up a suitable ascot or foulard as you check out the Raghubir Singh / Dayanita Singh exhibit in the top floor gallery before you join us. Grab some Gitanes on your way over, too.

by Preston Merchant | 14 May 2008 19:05 | New York, United States |
Gitanes are coming? I might have to go back to smoking!

by Neal Jackson | 15 May 2008 12:05 | Washington, DC, United States |
my scarf is made out of wool, I think; does that count? It’s not like I’d show up wearing a polyester scarf, even if I could make it.

by Akaky | 15 May 2008 15:05 (ed. May 15 2008) | New York , United States |
Mmmmmm… Gitanes and itchy wool scarves…

by J-F Vergel | 15 May 2008 16:05 | New York City, NY, United States |
BTW, Ze’sopol, you should come to DUMBO and look around anyway. In my view this is an event for the art/craft of photography, and is not an exclusive thing, so as a photographer you ARE a part of the festival. A lot of the exhibits (maybe even all) are open and worth the trip (F train to York Street stop). But by all means come to the reBar tomorrow.

by Neal Jackson | 15 May 2008 16:05 | New York, United States |
have fun, neal. wish i could be there but am in sichuan photographing earthquake.

by Alan Chin | 16 May 2008 03:05 | Beijing, China |
See you fine folks this evening.

Also, I have an extra festival pass that will get you into all the exhibitions during the day. Free to the first person who asks for it!

by Preston Merchant | 16 May 2008 16:05 | New York, United States |
It’s three hours until the get-together. I talked with the manager at reBar and he is ready. Start by going up the stairs and looking to the right for the room with the pool table. Come early to take advantage of the happy hour until 7 pm.

I saw Turu, one of our founders, this morning and he is going to try to be there (he is juggling baby duty).

Best news for all of you is that I have a wicked cold and my voice is almost gone, so you won’t have to listen to me much!

by Neal Jackson | 16 May 2008 18:05 | New York, United States |
Just got home… Wish I’d been there to see a few familiar faces.

Tell all ya’ll.

by J-F Vergel | 17 May 2008 03:05 | New York City, NY, United States |

I’m on the run, but I uploaded these three hurriedly here at powerHouse arena.

Here are Emanuele and Fiore Bottazzi.

And here are Carolyn, Preston and Gregory in a standard party shot.

Others were there, as was a video camera and various flash devices, which were passed around. One corded remote, attached to my G9, also being passed around, generated this artsy shot (I don’t know who took it).

I do believe those are some of the best NYC LS get-together shots to date…nicely done!

Who won at pool? Besides erica, of course….

I was too busy grilling Grant for techie info about his ab-fab red carpet shots to play..in fact, i think we all talked and shot the whole time. Ed did try to slip me some alcohol in my pineapple juice though, probably in hopes of beating me at pool.

by erica mcdonald | 19 May 2008 20:05 | New York, United States |
So much fun… and I missed it. ;(

by J-F Vergel | 19 May 2008 22:05 | New York City, NY, United States |
Me missed party too! Shit.

Did manage to get in the Chris Morris and Nachtwey presentations though.

Another party soon NY’ers?

My birthday is on June 9th and so a little bash around then would be fun. I’ll post again on it should any of the “regulars” be interested.

by Paul Treacy | 19 May 2008 22:05 | New York City, United States |
Paul…Your birthday is it? Clever ploy to get free beers. HA! Wish we could of crossed paths at the Sunday seminar. Loved the Ladefoged and Morris presentations.
