This workshop aims to address professional photographers and photographic students.

Visual storytelling has become increasingly important in a digital world which confronts the public with a large stream of images everyday. When used well, pictures can be a powerful tool of relation. This workshop intends to support the realization of already started or planned reportages of the participants, as well as to improve their visual skills. It will deal with questions such as: how to create a strong narrative and how to develop a personal photographic language, that supports what we want to tell. The participants are invited to bring along their current projects. On their basis, the process of creating a reportage will be explored: how to research ideas, how to translate them into a compelling story and how to shoot them in the most impressive way possible. The workshop program includes – besides an intense debate about the presented projects – completing the project conception, optimizing the story line and editing.

Robert Knoth began his career as a photojournalist in 1993. Throughout the 90’s he covered many of the conflict zones in Africa, Asia and the Balkans. Since then his work has been widely published in international magazines, such as: New York Times, Der Spiegel, Sydney Morning Herald, La Repubblica, Sunday Telegraph Magazine, amongst many. In recent years he has been working on long term projects as an autonomous documentary photographer. He has been following the conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan since 1996. Together with writer and broadcaster Antoinette de Jong Knoth has been documenting the path of Afghan heroin to Europe for over two decades. His book “Poppy – Trails of Afghan Heroin” was published by Hatje Cantz in 2012. Throughout his career Robert Knoth has won numerous prizes, including two World Press Photo Awards in 2000 and 2006.
