Afghani Visa Extension Advice Needed

I’m doing a project in Afghanistan in the Kandahar area – and will be there for around five weeks. The embassy here in London will only give me a visa for four weeks, and have told me I can only extend it in Kabul. I hadn’t intended to spend anytime in Kabul.
Does anyone have any advice? Is there a way around it or will I have to go to Kabul to do this? If so any advice on the practicalities would be greatly appreciated.
