Robert Giroux began his editorial photography career in his hometown of Montreal in 1987 covering Canadian politics and sporting events for Agence France-Presse (AFP) and then in 1991 moved to their North American HQ in Washington DC. He has photographed five US President’s, countless world leaders, CEO’s, as well as numerous prominent actors, musicians and other artists. From 1995 to 2000 he was one of two Newsweek magazine contract photographer assigned to the White House travel pool.
In early 2000 he was recruited to manage the picture-desk and editorial operations for the, then fledgling, Getty Images News & Entertainment wire service in New York City. Later becoming their first chief photographer for news in the Americas he designed the software still used by all staff photographers and editors to edit, caption and transmit images from the field.
His success with several editorial technology projects garnered him a promotion and transfer to Getty Images’ Seattle headquarters and a position as Director of Editorial Technology Partnerships where he designed and implemented a global distribution and picture desk system which brought all regional picture desks onto a central platform.
Robert has now returned to his first passion, as a full time freelance editorial photographer based in Washington, DC, while still keeping his fingers in editorial technology on a consulting basis for select media clients.
