Tom Stoddart's Perspectives

This exhibition has been pulling in crowds throughout the Olympic Games – from dozens of nations.
By Sept 11 it’s on track to clock up 250,000 visitors – and its FREE.

Tom Stoddart Perspectives exhibition attracts 100,000 visitors in first three weeks
(International acclaim for photographer’s retrospective)

More than 100,000 people from all over the world have visited Tom Stoddart’s open-air photographic exhibition at More London Riverside, between City Hall and HMS Belfast.

Perspectives opened on the South Bank on 25th July and with four weeks still to run is set to attract around 250,000 visitors.

The display of signature black and white images, shot over a 40-year career, have left many visibly moved and the website (http://www.youtube.com/user/78perspectives/videos), hosting video feedback from people viewing the show, has had more than 21,000 visits.

Stoddart, who has been at the exhibition almost every day, said, “The public reaction to the exhibition has been incrediblysatisfying. People have taken time out from the wonderful Olympic party to stand quietly inside the exhibition and reflect on the photographs. Watching parents explain to their children who Nelson Mandela is, or what the BerlinWall was, is brilliant and quite emotional for me.

“These images represent milestones in my life as a photojournalist. The world’s nations have been joined together by a wonderful sporting festival whose motto is ‘swifter, higher, stronger’. I hope that people visiting the exhibition will leave with a greater determination to understand and help those with little access to clean water, food and medicines who, through no fault of their own, cannot run more swiftly, jump higher or be stronger”.

Perspectives is staged in participation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has worked with Stoddart toillustrate the repercussions that the lack of safe access to health care has on populations caught in armed conflicts or other emergencies. Too often safe access falls victim to the targeting of health workers, shelling of hospitals, blocking access for life-saving ambulances and general insecurity that means health care simply ceases to function for those who need it most.

Sean Maguire, spokesman for the ICRC said, “The inability of the wounded and sick to receive effective health care is one of the biggest humanitarian challenges in the world right now. It affects millions and the ICRC has thus made it a priority to improve the safe access to health care for wounded and sick caught by armed violence around the globe”
