Health of documentary film making market

Do people think there is a growing market for documentaries, growing commercial and financial support for documentary film making? Does new technology make it easier to work as a documentary film maker or does increased awareness from the public limit the opportunities for real insight, make subjects more careful about how they appear?

We’ve had an increase in documentary films here in Norway. A lot of films make it to the cinema.Mostly the films are foreign, but there seems to be an increase in domestic films too.

The government and other private organizations are very, very keen on handing out grants and funds for documentary filmmakers that is willing to push the boundaries – both thematically and aesthetically (is that a real word?).

Perhaps Norway is a weird country when it comes to documentaries, or, perhaps, the tides are turning and documentaries are “in” again (online videojournalism seems to think so). I’m thinking of writing my Masters Degree on documentaries, btw.

It seems to me that subjective documentaries are the ones that make it. Those who claim objectivity (what a nasty word) doesn’t seeem to make it in the long run.
