Helicopter rental NYC for aerial shot

Hi all,

I am currently working on a project about a certain part of the Bronx in NYC. For this project I would like to take one aerial shot of that area, hence would need to rent a helicopter for this.

Do any of you have experience renting a helicopter in NYC and could suggest a good company for this. It might in the end be too expensive for me anyway but let’s see. I already e-mailed Liberty Helicopters and ZIP Aviation but didn’t yet get an answer.

Thanks in advance,
Martin

Also check out Vincent Laforet’s web site and contact info. Looks like he has a lot of air shooting time around NYC. Can’t hurt.

Check with Cameron Davidson, Martin. I don`t know he has shot from a helicoptor in NYC, but he specializes in aerial photography and has published books. Check out his website. He is on LS, but he responded when I e-mailed him, rather than by PM.

Martin, Al Cerullo, but $$$$$$$$$. http://www.moviepilots.com/members/cerrulo.html There are also tight restrictions on flying helos in New York, generally you can’t go under 1,000 feet over land, without special permission. I hope this helps.

Thanks all for your help! I e-mailed Vincent Laforet already, or rather his studio I guess. Liberty Helicopters already replied with a quote and I will now also e-mail Cameron and Al Cerullo. Thank’s all for your help!

Oh by the way Andy, it’s really hard for me to imagine how high 1000 feet are. Roughly 300 meters but I never photographed from 300 meters heigth. :-) But I guess this should be a pretty good heigth to get an overview photograph of an area that includes some 30 buildings… I hope…

Martin…Don’t forget the best UV and polarizing filters you can afford or can’t afford but need. Smog, and humidity can be killers that your eyes can’t see. Good luck.

Martin, if you go to the top of the Empire State Building observation deck, that is 1200 feet, you can get an idea. Its really not a great altitude to have to work from…..

If you are shooting part of the Bronx that is near the river, I think the pilots have some latitude, because they can ditch in the river :) if need be….but ask Al.

Martin, if you wish to see what might be like to look down onto the land from the height of about 300m and above with your camera, you can climb some hills outside of Vienna. Niederoesterreich is a better region. I`ve been to Duernstein in 2006, but the hill there is too low, but the topographical map I still have of Wachau Nibelungengau shows the altitude of over 300m outside of Krems. I looked up Google Maps to double-check, but the map is useless regarding the altitude. Why don`t you consult the tourrist office of Niederoesterreich to see if they know of a suitable location in the vicinity of a city/town? I know the area near Padova, Italy better as I have hiked and driven around, but that might be a little too far unless you have another excuse to get there.

Just another thought…if your project is of any value to the NYC area, you might want to contact the public relations dept. of the New York/New Jersey Port Authority and ask for advice or some kind of deal where they supply the chopper and you supply the pics.
