hook up an NGO

Hi everyone – please take a minute to cast a vote for “The Making of a Girl” in the Current TV competition. If the video wins, $15,000 will be awarded to the non-profit GEMS, which works with sexually exploited girls here in New York. There’s also 100K prize going to the makers of the video, which they’ve agreed to split with GEMS, so if the video wins, it will make a huge impact.

Voting is open until Dec 2, and as of today, the GEMS video is less than 100 votes away from winning. Between now and Dec 2, Lightstalkers will have about 30,000 unique visitors, so lets put this machine to work.

You can also spread the message through other networks, or by email to your contacts.

hasta la victoria, T

Dear Friends:
>
> Good news! Current TV has extended the deadline so there’s still a chance to vote on the GEMS video “The Making of A Girl”. This 5 minute video portrays the journey of a adolescent girl who’s lured into the sex industry and is one of six finalists chosen for the Current TV competition ‘Seeds of Tolerance’. The winning video will be shown on TV and GEMS will receive $15,000 to support its ground-breaking work with sexually exploited girls.
>
> The commercial sexual exploitation of children and youth is the most accepted, and ignored, form of child abuse in our country. Most people think that this is something that happens to children from Thailand or Eastern Europe, yet the average age of entry into the sex industry in this country is 13 years old. Sexually exploited girls are frequently blamed for their victimization and regularly treated as criminals for the abuse and sexual violence they experience. Changing public perception and helping people recognize sexually exploited youth as victims has been a core component of GEMS work since its inception in 1999. ‘The Making of a Girl’ is an amazing opportunity to ensure that the commercial sexual exploitation of children and youth is no longer ignored.

>
> Every day at GEMS, we work with young women and girls who’ve experienced the devastating violence and abuse of the sex industry, every day we help girls rebuild their lives, every day we work to raise awareness, change legislation and create a society where the buying and selling of children is no longer acceptable.

great stuff.

OK… I voted for the film because the cause was just and the writing quite excellent in its content and poetic presentation. The visuals said nothing to support that content.

Gayle,
What I meant was that the actual, nondescript visuals did little to support the greater content…no physical involvement to any extent with the subject. No “oh shit look at that” sort of thing.

thanks all -

I think worth mentioning, that whether or not you like the video, it’s significant that the film makers have committed to splitting their award money with the NGO, so it’s closer to $70,000 at stake for GEMS – that’s worth voting for.

I don’t know the film makers, or have any connection with them, but LS homegirl Nina Alvarez has been working with GEMS for a while, and can attest to the importance of their work.

Wow, that’s even better, Teru. Great NGO and good work, Nina!

Thanks Teru, for bringing both NGO and video to my attention, I will pass it along through email to both colleagues and friends.

Yes, yes, well done indeed.

I saw once a picture of a GEMS’s girl beaten up by her pimp. I heard many stories about their lives and how playful and hopeful like children they are. My vote is to The girls and to GEMS

Come on folks, this film needs to catch up a little. Go vote for it. Go on!

by Paul Treacy | 24 Nov 2006 12:11 | Manhattan, United States |
Paul!!!! :))))))....here-here!...as T said, let’s put this leviathan (baby) LS to work y’all!!

by Bob Black | 24 Nov 2006 13:11 | Toronto (home sweet), Canada |
C’mon people, let’s not have another underwhelming response here. Solidarity.

by Simon Anstey | 25 Nov 2006 07:11 (ed. Nov 25 2006) | Copenhagen, Denmark |
BUMP, BUMP, BUMP! :))))))...im with Simon…i dont believe in bullyin’ any of y’all for voting (that’s an issue of conscience), but shit, these sisters and the work they do deserves our collective support (and, if you want to support some one else, by all means), but with so much traffic at LS, and so many posts about “review my webpage/gallery/new project/multimediafilm/tatoo” or “hi, I did this…” or “hi, I need technical/spiritual/professional/carrer/academic/dating/digial/analog/editorial/etcetcetc advice”, can we as a group show some love and help out: most of the time, what we do is really about our bloody selves (yea, me too for sure), so how about some drummin’ in da woods, y’all….go down, moses!!!....

GEMS need our manical/narcissitic selves to help their tireless/selfless organization! :))))

go girls, go girls, go girls!!!!
cheers,
bob

p.s., im jumping off my soap box now :)))))

I think we still need more votes here. I would like to see more of you voting simply because it would be great to see if this community could help others to change things…

Anybody know the score? I wanted to bump this up but noticed the last voting date was yesterday (Sunday 2nd Dec.).
