Hosting a Website
|
Folks, I am about ready to post my website on the web, and I was wondering if any of you more experienced types had suggestions about how to go about doing it. basically I just wanted to know my options, with whom, how much, etc. The website will be simple,s o that anyone looking at it can do so with ease and fluidity. I keep getting offers from Yahoo to host the website, anyone know anything about it? Thanks.

Rhizome.org is what I have, and I think they charge around 60$ a year. Check it out. Then you can just upload it with Fetch witch you can downlaod for free. Best M

Excellent, thank you Malin. I will look into it.

i use pair networks at pair.com which is about the same if you pay in advance for the ftp plan. not sure how many extras you need as far as your host is concerned. my cousin pointed me to a really cheap option which gives you lots of space but i’ll have to wait until i get back to new york (and my home computer) to check on what that was. also, shinji does hosting i think if you ask him nicely. :-)

I say : let shinji host-
it’s always good to have someone to call when things go black or aren’t working. it happens even at larger companies & sometimes can be hard to track down a cust. serve rep. to just tell you ” it’s a server problem, you’ll have to wait two hours” or something like that…
|
Thanks everyone for your advice. Just goes to show that LS really works. shinji, you´ll be hearing from me when I have everything ready.
|
i should have said this before but i’m planning on switching to shinji as soon as i can get my act together.

Aw, you guys are sweet. As it happens, I’ve just updated the hosting details sheet on my site: http://kuwayama.com/hosting/details.cfm
I’ve also just received word from my hosting partner (a top-notch national firm) that my Basic plan is going to support databases in the near future…
|
I’m also very happy with Pair.com. There are lots of options depending on what, exactly you need (custom CGI, databases, etc.), support and reliability are great, and the prices are reasonable.

After being on if for more than a year there has been no downtime. It has unlimited everything (e-mail addresses, databases, mailinglists, multiple sites on a simgle host). Helpfull support. And all for $20 a year. Then I use godaddy.com to register my domain.

If you plan to use your site to transfer (FTP) large image files regularly (ie, illustrations, photographic images, etc. for print), you may want to be sure that whatever package you sign up for - whoever you choose to go with - allows plenty of uploads/downloads. I believe (some?) hosts have a cap on how much you can do on a monthly basis.
I use http://www.mediatemple.com (US$10/month), but I did not realize Shinji hosts, so I will look into this option. . . of course!
|
Retsu, excellent point! Bandwidth and disk space quotas are a good way to differentiate between hosting packages these days, especially, as you point out, for graphics professionals.
If you know you’re going to be using a lot of bandwidth/space, sometimes it helps to factor in “overage” costs. Some companies gouge on overage, and others can actually be pretty reasonable. I have one client which chooses to go 400% over quota every month, because paying the overage is actually cheaper than going up to the next tier of hosting. YMMV, of course!
Disclaimer: Kuwayama Design does offer hosting, but encourages comparison shopping!

Catalog.com is worth taking a gander at.

Just want to put in a plug for Shinji, he hosts my site and I’ve been happy with how it’s worked out. [disclaimer: oh alright already….so Shinji is also a friend, but he still really is a fine place to go to for hosting yr website!] and Eugene does a great job designing them….same disclaimer applys. LOL

Anybody has experience with this service? [ http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/]url:http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/
It works just like prepaid phone coupons – you prepay the amount of bandwidth you except, and before it runs out they send you an email so you can choose to prepay more or just stop it for a moment… no over bandwidth ripoff fees (so no ugly surprises like for poor Naomi…)
Data Transfers: 1GB/$1.00 Disk Space: $0.01/MB/Month
Which sounds interesting because I don’t like paying each month… OTOH the total is slightly higher than for example from Shinji.
Any references on them?
Thanks

My money, also, would be with Shinji…I love the layout of Teru’s and Adam’s pages..but more importantly, i think its PREMIUM, when a site-hoster (and designer) can be easily contacted…my web site (simple, simple, simple) was given to me for free (as was the hosting space) by a gallery that I was dealing with, and I cannot emphasize enough the premium quality of contact with designer/host….cheers, bob

I’ve been very happy with hostsave.com but I don’t have a very large or techincal website.
|
My lady and I are hosting all of our sites with Shinji, and it has been great. He also designed her site, which has worked out really well for her.
|
Jon It seems you have plenty of options. I have had my site hosted by Tylmail www.tylmail.com & they used my website for advertising their services so I now get free hosting & Domain renewal. Always worth looking into to negotiate a better package price!! There quite cheap anyway. However for the basic package I’m not sure how much Bandwidth you get. It is something worth considering. BTW I finally have the main elements of my new site finished. Have a look. I know it does not have that super WOW factor but hey I did it myself. Looking forward to seeing yours. Good luck Mark

I use www.Your-Site.com......very happy with them, cheap, provide stats, emails, etc.
|
I use www.tigertech.net. They host for $6.25 a month and update your domain for you so no one can buy iy without you knowing (nice to have) They provide 2gb or so.(Nice people on the phone.) More than you’ll ever need. Have been happy with them. Not affiliated with them just a satisfied customer for three years.
Best,
jaime

There seems to be a renaissance of posts from 2004.

Folks posting in 2006: appreciate the added comments, but this thread is pretty old now (November 2004), so I am going to close it down. website has been up since last spring, and havent had any problems at all with the host - only problems stemmed from my own sloppy coding, which I gradually fixed. The site is pure html created by yours truly with his own feeble webmastery.
I will say one thing: though i love some of the Flash displays that photographers have these days, every editor I know or have communicated with in some fashion have told me they dont like Flash and prefer simple html pages. Maybe that will change in time as the Flash displays get more sophisticated or editors simply get used to seeing them. But I have gotten emails from time to time praising the simple scroll-down design - these were not from editors but just random viewers, so I guess even though its not a dramatic layout, it seems to work.
