i just left The Voyager.. not the nicest place in the world but clean and private and very close to Central Station.. it ran 40 Euros per night but it may go up for weekends.. there are lots of other hotels nearby as well.. and hostels, too.. good luck.

Do a google search for 1 star hotels or you might try youth hostels. They are very affordable, clean and safe. A few years ago I stayed at hotel Lindia down the street from Vondel park and was quite happy. Hope this helps…Pat

Used to live in Amsterdam. Of course did not really need hotels. A popular choice in the more alternative crowd is the Hotel The Filosoof near The Vondel Park. Midrange, I guess.
A good starting point to look for cheaper and still decent places is between the Central Train Station and The Beurs. Once I had a look at two or three that looked more than decent and looked safe too. I’ll try to explain: when coming from the Central Station there is a huge boulevard with shops and restaurants one side The Damrak, on the other side is a canal. Follow the Damrak for approx. 700m (approx.?) cross a bridge. In front of you are a row of—as far as can remember- mostly old big warehouses, at least two or three have decent accommodation. When I checked in summer 2005 was about 50-60 Euros. There plenty others in the area, plenty of seedy one’s I heard.
