how can I deodorize a smelly camera?
|
I just got a D2H in what would otherwise be a decent trade, but the previous owner was a smoker who wears patchouli, which is so infused into the camera that the scent is for me an unwelcome bonus that sticks with me after shooting. I tried wiping down the grip with a cloth and rubbing alcohol, but it’s still there.
I’ve found tips for ridding cat piss on camera bags or airing out smoker-owned gear, but I’m worried that the patchouli oil is a permanent mod. Best I found was a question/answer about a dresser, but I’m not yet ready to try Murphy’s Oil Soap and letting it sit outside for a week.
EDIT: Just found a post by a poor soul whose cat pissed on his bag with full kit. Apparently wrapping his Nikon FE in Bounce dryer sheets did the trick. Heading to the supermarket now…

My cameras smell like Indian food. Occupational hazard.

Have you thought about baking soda? It absorbs odor pretty well. The trick would be to keep it out of the camera. Arm and Hammer makes a box that has some sort of filter, I think it’s called Fridge Fresh, that allows air to flow through while keeping the baking soda inside. You could seal the camera and the baking soda in a ziplock and leave it for a few days. Obviously, you’d want to see if any baking soda leaked out of the box.
I shot on a lobster boat once, and my camera bag got infused with the smell of bait (rotten fish). I had to saturate the bag several times with Fabreeze, then some sort of odor absorbing liquid I got at a pet store.

A few drops of Thieves oil on any stupid cloth, enclosed with the camera in a ziploc bag for a day or so should do the trick as well.

thanks for the suggestions—The dryer sheets seem more like a ‘mask’ than a neutralizer, so I have it in a tupperware bin now with a box of baking soda, and it seems to be working.
If this fails, I’ll try Nature’s Miracle. I once house-sat with seven insane pooches and that stuff saved a carpet. The homeowners even left it out on the counter for me, they knew.
Thieves oil—it sounds like Whole Foods’ organic Cipro! Great story, but I hope it doesn’t come down to that.

Now does anyone have an additive which can stop pics from stinking?

Coffee grounds may also work

the Bounce dryer sheets worked!
a day and a half wrapped in dryer sheets and a towel over that, then stuck in a tupperware bin, and the camera now smells like Febreze Fresh Scent, without a trace of patchouli.
As for how long this may last, I emailed the guy who posted the tip on Rangefinder Forum, and he said he swears by it now. He said he’s used it several times to permanently get rid of cat pee and cigarette smoke odors, and that distinct smell ingrained in the leather on old former Soviet Union rangefinders.

“that distinct smell ingrained in the leather on old former Soviet Union rangefinders.”
That would be stupid Formaldehyde.
