How does a photo collective/agency work?

With a lot of freelance photographers out there trying to form their own agencies/collectives or joining one, I am curios on how they work. Anyone knows?

Things like how they share/divide their income between the organization and the photogs themselves…? How they divide the assignments? and how each group goes out to find work or sell their work… What type of resources they pull together….

There is probably no one single formula, but as a newbie I kind of curios.

Like when I was talking to one member of VII, I found that each photogs there is out there on their own, looking for their own contracts and works, So I am not so sure what the advantages of forming a agency or a collective.
