Landing Signal Officers direct aircraft onto the landing area of the flight deck. Because pilots approaching the short, narrow deck have a poor view of the landing area, specially-trained pilots are assigned to stand portside aft, facing the incoming plane, and radio corrections to the landing aircraft.
