RANYA, IRAQ: Many women and girls jumped from the Kaywa Rash mountains to their death. Women's rights advocates believe that many of them suffered severe gender-based violence such as forced marriage, domestic violence, rape and threatened honor killing. It is suspected that many women are coerced into committing suicide or are murdered in a manner to make it appear to be a suicide.
